Communication in the digital age: a necessary discussion
Synopsis
The chapter reflects on the changes that digital technology has generated in communication and in the way communicative practices develop in contemporary society. Based on a theoretical review, the author analyzes how the expansion of information technologies and digital networks has modified the processes of production, circulation, and consumption of content, as well as the social and cultural dynamics linked to communication.
Within this context, the chapter also discusses the place that communication occupies as a field of knowledge. The text argues that although the discipline has advanced in building theoretical and methodological frameworks, it is still in the process of consolidating itself as a science. Therefore, the importance of strengthening academic debate and integrating new perspectives that help to understand the changes produced by the digital environment is emphasized.
The chapter also addresses the impact of the networked society and new forms of interaction mediated by technology, which transform social relationships and the circulation of information. Finally, it highlights the need for communication professionals to develop a critical and updated perspective in response to the challenges of the digital world.
